MediaUnits is one of the monetization modules which enables users to insert any kind of custom media, advertizing or design content into publications. It can be banners, images, graphics, video presentations, HTML coding or simply a plain text notes.

This module may be used in any way to enrich the published content at users’ discretion.
Custom content is added to original content in the form of media units. Several media units may be used in the same piece of content in different spots. This makes the initial content look rather original and unique and will be appreciated by search engines and visitors. At the same time it can be another great money-making opportunity for SGW users.

An unlimited number of media units may be used for random insertion into content. Every unit is assigned to a campaign so to be easily filtered. Each campaign will insert assigned media units into a unique spot of the content. However different campaigns may share the same spot if needed. Up to 4 campaigns may be used in the same project. As a result 4 different media units may appear in the content on random basis.

Media units – here you create new media units and edit existing ones.

Add new

To create a new media unit you need to press "Add new" button.

P ic.6.3.4.2- New MediaUnit

Name – you need to give a unique and informative name to your new media unit

Campaign – every media unit must be assigned to a campaign. This helps to sort media units for different projects and, for example, by size or topic.

Note: if you wish to use the same media unit in several campaigns you need to create a new media unit with different name.

Media unit can be assigned to an existing campaign (see drop-down menu) or to a brand-new campaign. To assign media unit to a new campaign use "Create new" option from drop-down. A new text field will appear. Enter new campaign name in "Create new" filed.

Content – this text field is for media unit content. Here you may use any charters or syntax for your media unit. HTML, JavaScript, plain text, just make sure this content can be read by browser.

Add HTML comment to media unit – this option will help you locate your media unit in source code of a webpage. It will use the name of your media unit and will look like this <!--media unit name--> … <--/media unit name--!>

If you don’t need this option simply uncheck it.

To save new media unit press "Add" button.

To see the list of existing media units press Edit in main module interface.

Pic.6.3.4.3- Edit MediaUnit

You will see the list of created media units.

- these icons show status of media unit (active/not active). Not active media units will not be used in the campaign.

-  press this icon to go to media unit editor

- press this icon to permanently remove media unit from the list

To filter media units by campaign choose the campaign name from the drop-down menu above the media units list.

Export/Import

Using Export/Import option you can save the list of media units on your computer and transfer them to another SGW installation.

6.3.4.4- Export/Import media units

We use XML file to save all settings regarding the list of media units. To save media units on your computer go to Export section and press "Download Media Units" as XML.

Now you can easily add saved media units to another SGW installation. Press Browse button, find the file on your computer and press Import button.

You can enable all media units manually or use Enable for all projects option (checkmark) if you want the program to do it automatically.

Now let’s see how the module works.

Position – this option will set the spot in the content where your unit will be inserted: right/left wrapped/not-wrapped, above, below.

Note: "Above" option will place media unit above content body, but not above the title.

When you create your media unit you need to mind about it dimensions. Depending on the dimensions you choose the position of the unit in the content.

Note: all media units assigned to the same campaign will be placed to the same spot of every piece of published content.

However, you may choose a random placement in Position option. So every time the content is published your media units will be placed in random spot of the text. Again, be careful with media unit dimensions if you don’t want to “crank” the original text.

See the examples of possible dimensions here: http://bannersizes.sheersoftware.com/

Note: To add plain text to the content you should better use left content wrapped position

Campaign – here you choose a set of media units you wish to place into the content.

We would like once again to pay your attention to this moment.

You already know that all your custom pieces of content you wish to insert into original content are called media units. In order to make it easier to filter them we assign media units to campaigns. For example you may include media units with the same dimensions to the same campaign. Or you may use the same campaign for media units with related topic.

You should always remember about the spot of the content you wish to place you media unit to. If in the same campaign you have media units of the same topic but with different dimensions you need to deactivate media units which will not fit the chosen spot. The same thing with media units of the same dimension but related to different topics, just deactivated not relative media units.

Remember: media units will be active/not-active only for the current project.

Posting method – here you choose the way media units from the given campaign will be posted.
Rotate – one after another (after all unique media units are posted it will start all over again)
Random – randomly every time

Let’s see the example of how media units work.
